How Body Language Can Help With Dog Training

As we all know, it’s very important to make sure that training is high on the agenda when you get a new puppy, but it’s also something that should be ongoing throughout your dog’s life. The old adage that “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” certainly holds no currency and, in fact, dogs generally love learning, no matter how old they are.

We naturally turn to voice commands as our first port of call when we embark on our training journeys, but something that should also be taken into account is body language, as this can certainly help cement what you’re trying to teach your dog. It’s another avenue of communication, after all, and one your dog will really appreciate.

For example, you can use your eyes and facial expressions to excellent effect as a training strategy. Dogs are incredibly observant and they’ll pick up on any kind of energy you send their way.

If your dog is misbehaving, a long and intense stare is one way to assert dominance and let them know they’ve made a transgression.

You can actually stop them from being naughty before they even start if you can see that they’re about to do something you don’t want. Simply narrow your eyes and stare at them, or frown if they continue. You might be surprised at how quickly they stop!

Your posture can also help you communicate with your dog, helping them to read your energy and understand what you’re asking of them.

Keeping a relaxed posture and maintaining calm, consistent movements will help ensure your dog retains a training mindset, whereas if your body language contradicts what you’re asking of them, they’ll end up rather confused.
