One of the most common questions I get asked as a dog trainer is whether owners should book a one-off session or commit to a full training package. The honest answer is that it depends entirely on your dog, the behaviours you need help with, and the level of support you are looking for.
Some dogs and owners benefit hugely from a single session that provides practical advice and a clear direction to follow at home. Others need more structured support over a longer period of time in order to build reliable behaviours in real-world situations. Every dog is different, which is why I tailor all of my training around the needs of both the dog and owner.
Whether you have a new puppy, a rescue dog settling into a new environment, or an adult dog struggling with behaviours such as barking, recall problems, pulling on the lead, or over-excitement, choosing the right type of training support can make a significant difference to your progress.
Understanding the Difference Between a One-Off Session and a Training Package
A one-off training session is designed to provide focused support around a specific issue or concern. These sessions are often ideal for owners who want professional guidance, reassurance, or practical advice on one or two manageable behaviours.
For example, many owners book an Ask Sean consultation to discuss puppy biting, toilet training, crate training, excessive barking, lead walking, recall, or excitement around visitors entering the home. During these sessions, I provide practical strategies that owners can start implementing immediately.
For some dogs, this level of support is enough to get things moving in the right direction. Owners leave with a clearer understanding of why the behaviour is happening and how to begin improving it consistently at home.
Training packages work differently. Rather than focusing on a single moment in time, packages allow us to work together over a series of sessions so behaviours can be developed gradually and reliably. I offer flexible training packages for both puppies and adult dogs, including blocks of two, three, or five sessions depending on your needs.
This approach allows training to progress in stages while adapting to your dog’s development and responses along the way.
When a One-Off Session Can Be the Right Choice
There are many situations where a one-off session can be extremely useful.
If you are preparing for a puppy before bringing them home, a single preparation session can help you feel more confident about what to expect in the early weeks. We can discuss puppy-proofing your home, crate training, socialisation, toilet training, equipment, house rules, and common early puppy challenges before they arise.
A one-off session can also work well for smaller behavioural concerns that have not yet become deeply established habits. Jumping up, mild pulling on the lead, early recall training, or managing excitement around the front door are all areas where owners often benefit from clear professional guidance and a structured plan.
Some owners also prefer to begin with a single session before deciding whether they would like further support. This is one reason I offer a free 15-minute consultation call. It gives owners the chance to discuss their dog, ask questions, and determine whether my training approach feels like the right fit for them and their dog before committing to anything further.
For many owners, even a single session can provide reassurance, clarity, and a better understanding of how dogs learn.
Why Many Behavioural Issues Need More Than One Session
Although one-off sessions can be valuable, many behavioural issues require ongoing support and consistency over time.
Dog training is not usually about teaching a behaviour once and expecting it to work perfectly everywhere immediately afterwards. Real-life training is a layered process. Dogs first learn behaviours in calm, low-distraction environments before gradually practising those same skills in increasingly challenging situations.
For example, your dog may successfully recall to you inside your home or garden, but struggle completely in a busy London park surrounded by dogs, smells, joggers, squirrels, and distractions. The same applies to loose leash walking, calm greetings, or managing reactivity around other dogs.
This is why training packages are often the better option for owners looking for reliable long-term results. Follow-up sessions allow me to assess progress, refine techniques, troubleshoot problems, and gradually increase the level of challenge as your dog improves.
Behavioural change also depends on several factors outside of training sessions themselves. A dog’s genetics, early life experiences, previous learning history, consistency at home, and emotional state all influence progress. There is rarely an instant fix for behavioural problems, particularly for rescue dogs, adolescent dogs, or dogs with long-standing habits.
Training packages give owners the ongoing guidance and structure needed to navigate that process more successfully.
Why Puppy Training Packages Are Often Worthwhile
Puppyhood is one of the most important developmental periods in a dog’s life. Early experiences and habits can have a lasting impact on future behaviour, which is why many owners choose to invest in structured puppy training from the beginning.
Puppy training packages allow us to build skills gradually over time while adapting to your puppy’s changing developmental stages. During these sessions we can work on socialisation, lead walking, recall, settling calmly at home, handling, focus, confidence building, crate training, and house training.
One of the biggest benefits of one-to-one puppy training is that everything is tailored specifically to your puppy and your household. Every dog learns differently, and not every owner wants the same things from their dog.
Some owners need help building calmness and confidence. Others want to focus heavily on recall or lead walking. Some need guidance managing biting, chewing, or over-excitement. A tailored package allows training to evolve around your priorities rather than following a rigid one-size-fits-all structure.
Many owners also appreciate the calmer environment of private training sessions compared with busy group classes. One-to-one sessions allow us to work at your puppy’s pace without overwhelming them.
The Importance of Ongoing Support
One of the biggest advantages of booking a package is the support owners receive between sessions.
Often, questions only arise once owners begin applying the training at home. Sometimes dogs progress quickly in one area but struggle in another. Occasionally training plans need adjusting as we learn more about the dog’s motivations, triggers, or learning style.
Having ongoing communication and remote support between sessions helps owners stay consistent and confident throughout the process. It also allows me to guide owners through setbacks or plateaus, which are a completely normal part of dog training.
Consistency is one of the biggest factors influencing long-term success, and regular support makes maintaining that consistency much easier.
My Approach to One-to-One Dog Training
All of my training is based on positive reinforcement, force-free, scientifically backed methods. I am a licensed Clever Dog Company Method trainer, and my approach focuses on rewarding the behaviours we want while preventing rehearsal of behaviours we do not want.
I do not use punishment, intimidation, or force-based techniques. In my experience, these approaches create unnecessary stress for dogs and can damage the relationship between dogs and owners.
Instead, my focus is on helping owners understand why behaviours are happening and teaching practical techniques that work in everyday life. I tailor every session around the individual dog because no two dogs are the same.
My background as an ex-teacher also helps me explain training clearly and practically so owners feel confident continuing the work outside of sessions.
So, Which Option Is Right for You?
If you are dealing with a smaller issue, want initial guidance, or simply need reassurance that you are on the right track, a one-off session may be the ideal starting point.
If your dog has more complex behavioural challenges, multiple training goals, or you want long-term support and accountability, a training package will often provide better value and more realistic long-term results.
Ultimately, the best place to start is with a free consultation so we can discuss your dog, your goals, and the type of support that will suit you best. Every dog is different, and the right training plan should reflect that.
